Did you try the firing in fiber? As recommended by Prometheus?

The last piece I made was Ok. I fired it at 800°C / 45 min. This time I wrapped it with tissue and fibre blanket ( Brennwatte), do not know if this is the right word.
But I waste more then 100 g of Bronze till now.
I think I will make some more tests with the rest and do not buy it again.
I will write to you then and tell about.
At the moment I am working on a ring.

Hi Sabine
Yes, the first time I tried it at 700°C/ 30 min wrapped. It did not worked.
Then I tried it at 750°C/30 min unwrapped.
Then 750°C/ 30 min wrapped, then 800°C/ 45 min unwrapped and then the next pieces wrapped.
The last one worked, so I will try it again.

But it is funny, I had some round pieces, 3 mm thick, they blow up and crack during the middle ( 800°C). They were like metall after 10 min.
I dried them for 2 days roomtemperature and on top of the hot kiln, but they were still moist inside I think. It is incalculable for me.

Hi Cath,

we had the same problems with a testing piece. There were bubbles on one side of the piece after firing. We have that same questions in our German Metal Clay Forum, but we are not able to give answers, because we found no system by making this mistakes.

Mr. Aykoc recommends firing in a fibre blanket as well firing without blanket.

Best regards

Miriam Schwarz
